How to get started
Once your school has decided to pledge your committment to the Recycling Challenge the aim is to reduce waste and recycle or compost as much as possible, and to continue to do this! First you need to get in touch with us here to let us know you wish to take part. We will then send you a certificate to show you are part of the Recycle for Gloucestershire Schools challenge. You'll also be added to the leaderboard with 10 free points for signing up. Then - let the challenge commence!
You are now ready to undertake our easy to use waste audit. Once this is completed and returned to us you can then start to build up points for all the waste reduction, reusing, recycling and composting actions that you are putting in place. There is the chance to win some prizes for your school as well! We will also be running features highlighting wise waste actions we have heard about - so we might visit you!
To get the most out of this project we strongly advise that you set up a group of interested people, who will be able to take your ideas forward. It may be part of an existing school council, or it may be a dedicated waste action group, but it should include a named adult who we can keep in touch with. Members could include the Head, the caretaker, a governor and a pupil from each year group. It will be the group’s role to carry out, or oversee the actions that you choose from our list. The named adult will be responsible for letting us know how you are getting on, so that we can give you your points!
Why do we have to do a waste audit?
It is really important to have an initial set of results to act as a baseline, so that any future improvements can be evidenced. The waste audit is a tool that will show you the amount and types of waste your school currently makes. From this you can then decide what actions you want to put in to place to improve things. You can either conduct the waste audit yourselves (we have a kit we can loan out) or you can book us to come and help you carry this out.
