Why Recycle
Recycling is different to reusing. Recycling means that something is turned into something else, usually using energy to do this.
Reusing often needs little or no energy. If I fill an old jam jar with crayons, I'm reusing it. If I put it into my recycling box, and it is then melted and turned into a wine bottle, it has been recycled. The exciting thing about recycling is that it allows waste materials to be used again and again - and often they are transformed into something completely different! Did you know that 25 milk bottles can become a fleece jacket? To find out where all the different recycling goes once you have added it to your recycling click here.
Another brilliant thing about recycling is that it takes less energy to recycle things than make them from scratch. Recycling also reduces the need for mining, quarrying or logging, which is great news if you want Earth to last a little longer!
By recycling we can also reduce the amount of waste that we have to dispose of. This means fewer landfill sites and a reduction in greenhouse gases which helps combats global warming.
Don't forget - Schools in Gloucestershire can recycle paper, cardboard, cans, glass, tetrapacks and plastic bottles, old electrical equipment (such as fridges), IT equipment, computers and fluorescent light tubes with Printwaste.
