Yellow Pages recycling scheme 2009
Cheltenham schools are being invited to participate in the Yellow Woods Challenge, a scheme run by Yellow Pages and local authorities, coordinated locally by Vision 21.
Pupils and parents are asked to bring old Yellow Pages into their schools; the directories are collected from schools by Vision 21; and they are then taken for recycling and incorporation into new newsprint. Schools receive Teacher's Packs full of curriculum-linked recycling activities, posters and pupil stickers; a certificate of participation; and are in competition with each other for a share of £700 prizes for those schools collecting most directories per pupil.
In 2008 21 local schools took part, and 3500 directories were collected, most of which would otherwise have ended up in landfill (Cheltenham's kerbside collection scheme doesn't currently include Yellow Pages or telephone directories). There are already more schools joining in this year - hopefully we can beat last year's 7 tonnes!
