Waste of Space
During the summer holidays children throughout the Forest of Dean were invited to make rockets from recycled materials as part of a number of space related activities undertaken for Gloucestershire Libraries ‘Space Hop’ summer reading challenge.
The events, held at the seven district libraries, were held in conjunction with the Forest of Dean District Council’s waste team. In addition to making models, children were able to listen to stories and take part in a competition to win a bag full of recycled goodies.
Last week the five winners from Lydney, Coleford, Longhope, Cinderford and Mitcheldean received their prizes at the Main Place library in Coleford.
Debbie Duggan, Customer Service Librarian for Lydney, Bream and Coleford libraries comments: ‘This is the second year that we have worked alongside the council’s waste team and the hands-on activities always prove very popular. The children have had lots of fun and produced some fantastic models while learning a little bit more about their environment. It is great that libraries continue to be used not only as a place where younger visitors can come to improve their reading skills but a place where they can also enjoy the wider range of learning opportunities we have on offer.’
In total, 150 children attended the sessions held at the Forest’s libraries; further sessions were held across Gloucestershire in which a further 148 youngsters took part.
