Tours at the tip!
Local children visited Wingmoor Farm Household Recycling Centre during the Easter holidays for a guided tour.
The children spent an hour at the site finding out about which materials are collected, what happens to them when they are recycled, and the consequences for the environment if we don’t recycle.
Children had the opportunity to recycle items brought from home and see for themselves the compactors and wood crusher in action, which help to reduce the size of materials in the skips. The guided tour aimed to show children, who are not normally allowed out of vehicles at the HRCs for safety reasons, a chance to find out exactly what happens on the site.
Waste Education Officer Hannah Gray said “The children and adults that came along were really interested in everything we looked at and had lots of questions.” She added “It’s so important that children are actively involved in recycling from a young age, a guided tour was the perfect way to show them the site and explain what happens there, whilst keeping them safe.”
We hope to plan more guided tours in the future. Please email hannah.gray@gloucestershire.gov.uk if you’re interested in attending.
