Learning is fun at Gotherington School workshops
Hannah Gray, the waste education officer, visited Gotherington School on the 12th and 13th of February to run workshops that involved children from all of the classes.
The day started with an assembly showing the children what happens to their rubbish when it's put in the bin and discussing the alternatives. The reception class used a feely bag to investigate different materials, acted out the journey of a glass bottle going through the recycling process and then did some cutting and sticking to show what could be recycled in their local area.
Year 1 had great fun creating their own carrier bag holders (using recycled shirt sleeves and scrap pieces of textiles) to encourage re-use. Year 2 investigated the waste in their lunchboxes, they discussed what would happen next and then made spinners to help them remember what they had learnt. Year 3 made wonderful recycled paper and Year 4 searched through the previous days rubbish to find out exactly what the school was throwing away! Year 5 created some gorgeous mini rag rugs and Year 6 learnt about composting and then made mini composters.
Parents were invited along and joined in with all the activities, here are some of the parents comments:
'excellent subject material, really well presented - more please!'
'lots of interactive fun with an important eco message'
'the talk about plastic bags and where they go in the landfill was very clear; making the bag was an excellent idea and was well demonstrated. The children really enjoyed it'
