The prize-giving for the 2009 competition 'From Waste to Wildlife' was held during Recycle Now Week at WWT Slimbridge. Schools were asked to design a dragonfly from foil and aluminium cans, to highlight both the new dragonfly pond at WWT Slimbridge, and the importance of recycling aluminium.

The competition was jointly organised by WWT Slimbridge and RFGSchools.com, with support from Alupro. Sponsorship for the top prize of £400 came from one of the top aluminium recycling companies, Avon Metals Ltd who are based in Gloucester.

We were thrilled that the prizes were awarded by Country File presenter and Cotswold Farm Park Director, Adam Henson (visit the Cotswold Farm Park website here)
Adam gave the 110 children who came along a great presentation, and managed to tell us all about why he loves rare breeds, where the origin of the word 'Cotswold' came from, and how to do a 'noddy' to camera - all in under 10 minutes!

After the formal prize-giving was over we all went outside to feed the birds and to enjoy the beautiful grounds of WWT Slimbridge.

ImagesThe first prize of £400 to spend on an environmental project went to the following schools; Staunton and Corse Primary School, Elmbridge Junior School, Thomas Keble School and Sandford School.

The second prize - a Safari adventure day at WWT Slimbridge was allocated to Charlton Kings Infant School, Churchdown Village Junior School, Tewkesbury School and Paternoster School.

The third prize of a wormery donated by Gloucestershire County Council went to Churcham Primary, Beech Green School and Harewood Junior School.

The judges found the quality of work so high that they had trouble judging, so they decided to give special runners up prizes of a goody-bag to Benhall Infants School and Woolaston Primary School.
