Cooking up a treat while watching the waste-line!

Rob Rees, the Cotswold Chef visited schools to promote Recycle for Gloucestershire’s Zero Waste Week.

Rob was demonstrating that it’s easy to create tasty lunchbox treats that are good for the waist – and make less waste! Pupils helped rustle up naan bread, chicken rissoles, fruity couscous and omelettes. Rob explained that all these tasty treats could be made at home the night before, from left-overs that are often found lurking in the back of the fridge.

Rob went on to explain that food that ends up in the rubbish bin gets usually gets sent to landfill, unless you are lucky enough to live in a District that collects it in special caddies. Once food is covered with landfill soil it will rot down anaerobically (without air) to create methane, which is a harmful climate-change gas.

Finally Rob demonstrated to the audience some practical ways to reuse containers, and showed pupils his spices which he keeps in old jam jars and margarine tubs.
