Love Food
Hate Waste
Growing and transporting food uses lots of energy. What a waste if that food is then just thrown into the bin, uneaten!
We all love food, but did you know that about about a quarter of the waste in the average dustbin in Gloucestershire is food. When that food is dumped into landfill it rots down 'anaerobically' (that means 'without air') and produces methane. So not only have we wasted lots of energy growing and transporting the food, we're also causing damage to the planet by sticking it into landfill.
Here are a few things you and your family can do, to try to reduce your food waste:
• Take a shopping list to the shops. This way, you won't be tempted to get too much.
• Too much on your plate? Think about how much food to serve up so there's no waste.
• Be a crafty cook. Use left-overs to create new dishes.
• Stay as cool as a cucumber. Food stays fresh for longer when stored at the right temperature.
So, don't be a rotten tomato! Try to reduce your food waste and help to look after the environment.”
